Pair hit the US big league

8/10/2008 11:05:00 AM
The soccer credentials of Macarthur women Heather Garriock and Sarah Walsh, who are both Matildas, are becoming more impressive.

The pair was drafted into the United States’ Women’s Professional Soccer league last week.

Only two of four Australians chosen to play in what has been described as the world’s best women’s soccer league, Garriock will play for Chicago Red Stars and Walsh will play for the New Jersey-based Sky Blues.

It will be a return to familiar colours when Garriock pulls on Chicago’s top.

‘‘It’s the same colours, red, white and blue, as Leppington

Lions, the team I started playing with when I was six,’’ Garriock said.

‘‘I played in America in 2006 and 2007, so I’m also familiar

with the style of their game.

‘‘I’ve never been to Chicago, but they were my first choice.

‘‘The coach, Emma Hayes from England, is fantastic and I’m sure my game will improve under her.

‘‘It’s going to be interesting playing against Sarah – we know each other’s game inside out, so that’s not always the best thing.’’

Walsh, who is recovering from a leg break, can’t wait to head to US in March for pre-season training.

The former Ruse player’s skills were noticed when she was a member of the Australian Women’s World Cup team last year.

She will be joined by Australian team-mate Colette McCallum, who was a last-minute pick for the Sky Blues.

‘‘It’ll be the best women’s league in the world,’’ Walsh said.

‘‘It’ll be awesome – to get to play soccer anywhere and get paid for it is very rewarding.

‘‘I’m happy with Colette signing. We couldn’t get a better midfielder for the team and we should be in with a good chance of winning the league. It’s a very professional league, women’s soccer is more popular than the men’s soccer over there.’’
