Thefts from shops lead to 33 charges

LOCAL police were all over the shop during Operation Vikings literally.

The project, which ended on Saturday, was aimed at reducing local shoplifting.

Security and major retailers in Macarthur Square helped police and, over three days, 33 charges of shoplifting were laid and nine people were searched.

Police said after they reviewed CCTV footage they went to a house in Ambarvale and more than $1200 worth of stolen perfume was allegedly found.

A 36-year-old man was charged with shoplifting and three counts of assaulting police. He is expected to appear at Campbelltown Local Court today.

Also as part of the operation, police went to 16 licensed areas to make sure they were serving alcohol responsibly.

Chief Inspector Bryan Doyle said: ``The operation confirmed police suspicions of the underlying level of retail theft occurring at Macarthur Square.

``I'm very pleased with the result and we will be planning similar operations in the near future.''
