Hoppa's life on the other side

JOHN Hopoate is mending fences in the rugby league community.

The former Campbelltown junior, who played 207 NRL games with Wests Tigers, Manly and the Northern Eagles in a career spanning 11 seasons, has turned his hand to refereeing.

The one-time firebrand of the game, but who had talent and was recognised when selected for Australia and NSW in 1995, grew up in Claymore.

He now lives in the Manly area with his wife and eight children.

``I am serious about my refereeing,'' Hopoate, 33, said.

``I have just got my NSW Rugby League referee's ticket and I want to referee at a higher level, perhaps one day in the NRL.''

So far, the former winger has officiated in schoolboy matches and on Wednesday handled several matches Arrive Alive Cup games at Durrant Oval, Warwick Farm.

``I am enjoying the refereeing, it is certainly different from the days when I abused the refs and touch judges at times during my career,'' he said.

``Becoming a referee has given me a new perspective on the game and understanding of the rules.

``As a player I admit I didn't know all the rules, as a referee you are learning all the time about the rules of the game.''

Hopoate is splitting his time between refereeing and competing as a heavyweight division boxer.

His career came to an abrupt end in 2005 when he was suspended for 17 matches by the NRL Judiciary for striking Cronulla prop Keith Galloway during a game at Brookvale Oval.
