Tenpin bowlers make history

DANIEL Webb bowled competitors over in the 38th Australian National Junior Tenpin Bowling Championships this month.

The 15-year-old was among 14 boys and girls who represented Southern NSW in the competition in Brisbane.

His team took home the shield and made history to boot.

This was because it was the first time in seven years that NSW had won the coveted shield.

Daniel, who attends St Gregory's College in Campbelltown, started bowling when he was six years old.

Both of his parents work at Campbelltown City Bowl in Leumeah, where he practices six days a week.

Daniel said many juniors were 18 years old, the maximum permissible age to play in the junior competition.

"I was a bit unsure heading into the competition but we [NSW] were one of the favourites to win,'' the year 10 student said.

"Because my mum and dad work at the bowling alley, I can play whenever I want and they have computers there too so I can do my school work there. I bowl in lots of leagues but this tournament was hard because there were a lot of 18 year olds and they tend to be stronger, with more experience.''

Daniel scored an average of 220 points in his heats.

Before entering the tournament, his personal best was 290 points.

"I have bowled a 300 in practice, but that doesn't count,'' he said.

"I hope to do something with it [tenpin bowling] after school, but at the moment school comes first.

"I would definitely take the opportunity to be a professional bowler if it was offered to me.

"Even when people retire from the game, a lot of ex-bowlers become coaches.

"That's something I would be interested in [doing].''
