Geale wins IBO middleweight belt

A boodstained and battered Daniel Geale has won the International Boxing Organisation middleweight title to become Macarthur's latest world champion.

Geale, from Mount Annan, lived up to his nickname, "The Real Deal" at Wests Leagues Club in December, winning the fight with a unanimous points decision against undefeated Western Australian Daniel Dawson.

The judges scored the fight, 119-109, 120-110 and 120-110 in Geale's favour. Retaining his undefeated status since turning professional, 26-year-old Geale has won 19 professional fights with 12 knockouts.

Originally from Tasmania, Geale was true to his word when he said before the fight that if the contest lasted 12 rounds, he would "still be hitting hard".

Based at Grange Old School Boxing in Smeaton Grange, Geale also had help to prepare for the big fight from Jeff Fenech.

The fight went to plan for Geale who may have won every round.

A cut above Geale's left eye gave cause for concern in the fifth round when the fight was stopped to allow a doctor to inspect the cut.

The pair were due to meet in February and then in October but Dawson pulled out both times because of sickness and injury.

Geale did his homework on Dawson, a former world kickboxing champion renowned for his punching power.

While Dawson looked to land the big punch, Geale maintained a skilful boxing display, landing some accurate combinations. He kept Dawson at bay in the closing rounds and looked the fresher of the two towards the end of the fight.

Geale has agreed to a rematch.
